If you head on over to my review of Beefeater London Dry Gin, I give you a quick history of that style of Gin.

As you know, Genever Gin (Holland Gin) gave rise to London Dry Gin which started its own craze in old London town.  London Dry Gin made its way to the U.S. of A. and found itself being used in the new American invention: Cocktails.  This precipitated the need for a new Gin; thus, Old Tom Gin, a sweeter version of London Dry, was born.

But we feisty Americans can never leave well-enough alone, and have been monkeying around with Gin for over a century and a half.

Not wasting any more words:

Bluecoat is one of the best American Gins out there.

Seriously.  It is.  I’ll be reviewing another staggeringly awesome American Gin soon, but for now:

I can’t believe I haven’t reviewed Bluecoat yet. I talk about it all the time.

In its price point, you’ll compare Bluecoat to Plymouth, Tanqueray Ten, Death’s Door, and No. 209.

And don’t let its high proof scare you away.  94 is a perfectly acceptable proof for Gin.  In ye olden days, we’d call it “Navy Strength.”

Anyway, let’s talk scent & flavor profile.
On the nose, Bluecoat presents quite a bit of juniper, and then more subtle hits of cracked pepper, and lemon peel.  On the tongue, a carbon copy of the nose, but the citrus notes are more prominent.
The finish is a long, warm ride down a smooth hill.

Bluecoat is a modern take on the classic London Dry Gin.  On my Gin scale from:

Citrus – – – – Juniper – – – – Floral

Bluecoat rests right in the middle.  This is a Gin that knows what it is and isn’t shying away from its roots.  Juniper is prominent, as it should be.

This is a Gin that knows what it is and isn’t shying away from its roots.

Bluecoat is and always has been my top choice for a Burnt Martini.  It also works well in the following:

I do tend to keep multiple bottles of Gin in my house for various purposes, and Bluecoat American Dry Gin is always in my liquor cabinet.

Final Rating: 92 out of 100
