Well, it was…
The full results aren’t in yet, but early returns suggest that this live presentation of “The BoozeGuru Presents Whisk[e]y: 101” was a success.
I ran through topics such as “What is Whisk[e]y” and “Bourbon vs Scotch” and “Typical Flavor Profiles”… And then we got down to tasting!
Tasting consisted of 5 bottles from the top whisk(e)y producing nations of the world: the U.S. of A., Canada, Ireland, Japan, and Scotland. Said bottles were:
This crowd’s clear favorites were;
1. the no longer commercially available Hibiki 12,
2. the smooth and charming Tullamore Dew 12, and
3. 2016 Whisky of the Year Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye.
Excellent questions were asked by all; and class participation was exuberant. After tasting, food was had by all, then folks spiraled outward into the styles they preferred; educating their palates as they went.
The difficulty with a whisky tasting is that there is just no way to stay sober. Even with half-ounce pours, by whiskey #3 folks were tipsy. By the end of the night, no one was feeling any pain.
Thank you, Lyft, for keeping my guests safe on their journies home!
It is highly likely that these classes, or others like them, will continue.
Here’s hoping that these sessions, like whiskies, just get better over time!
Cheers!
That Crown Royal Rye is a surprise. I’m not a giant rye drinker but my brother is so I keep a bottle of High West Double Rye around for him. It’s good for the price, and I like the Manhattans I make with it. I like the Manhattans I make with the Crown Royal Rye just as much. I haven’t served it to my brother yet but there’s no reason I shouldn’t; it’s a fine sipper.
It really is a surprise! I was somewhat shocked when I wrote it up. I wasn’t expecting it to be as sweet and smooth as it is!
